Royal Brunei Airlines to suspend five services

Royal Brunei Airlines ("RBA") today announced that the company is moving forward with the first phase of its plan to stabilise operations, improve financial performance and enhance the customer service experience.

As part of that plan, RBA will suspend services to Auckland, Brisbane, Perth and Ho Chi Minh City effective at the end of October 2011. Flights to Kuching will also be suspended at the end of July 2011. Passengers who have purchased tickets for travel on suspended flights are asked to contact the travel agent where they purchased their tickets or their nearest Royal Brunei Airlines ticketing office.

Royal Skies members are still able to maintain their Royal Skies membership to continue earning miles with Royal Brunei Airlines. Members may redeem their Royal Skies miles for free flights, extra baggage allowance, upgrades and Sky Lounge access.

Story of our day

This is the story of our day. Our first official leave out of the post came to a bad start all because the airplane that was supposed to take us home could not take off due to some technical problems with the aircraft and now we are stuck in a newly opened hotel with a strong smell of fresh paint that is about to suffocate me!

We were supposed to be whisked away on a noon flight from Bangkok. Knowing the traffic in Bangkok, we were careful enough to give ourselves ample time to reach the airport within the usual 2 hour check in before the departure time. We left the InterCon in the heart of Sukhumvit at 10 am. Surprisingly the traffic was smooth thanks to the highway that goes straight to the Airport. We arrived at the airport within 45 minutes. As my entire family were travelling business and the aircraft was a small airbus A320, we were basically the only ones queing up in business so the check in was also smooth. we had plenty of time to kill before the supposed departure time. So I decided to spend time at the lounge whilst mrs went around the tax free shops window shopping. With all the travelling right on the first day from Vientiane starting from yesterday until today, I was really so tired to even move my legs nevermind galavant with your otherhalf frisking the shops looking if there was anything worth buying. I had been feeling very lethargic since I fell ill last week with this sharp pains at the lower back. The french doctor whom I had my last check up gave me some possible diagnosis of gall stone, kidney stone or possiblly liver problem if anything put together. I will definetly need to go for further check up at home to confirm what exactly is wrong with me.

Anyway, I could not fault anyone or anything up to the time when we were brought to the departure gate. We were told there would be a flight delay. So I called my dad just to let him know there would be a delay. Then came the extra topping of bad tiding, they could not fix the problem! I was told quietly the aircraft had a hydraulic problem to the landing gear and the captain would not give the go ahead to fly. Perfectly understandable as the pilot's prime responsibility is the safety of his passengers and his crew. But what I felt so aghast was that I also found out that the airline had also an ealier flight cancellation the day before and the passengers were flown at 430 am the next day. The passengers were bus loaded to the same hotel where we are staying now, stayed overnight and at midnight they were told they would need to pack and leave at 430 am! I had this sneaky feeling that we would get the same less than curtsy treatment. We arrived at the hotel with only a piece of apology note pasted on the desk at the reception telling us we will get free accomodation, free lunch and dinner. Knowing the food is not halal, we would have limited choices. So I asked for assistance at our embassy here to bring my family to a nearby halal restaurant. The entire family was obviously starving as the last proper meal we had was breakfast at 8 am and it was already 4 pm by the time we had our next meal. The restaurant called al hilal served superb thai cuisine in a cosy restaurant by the highway, which is a good 15 minutes from the hotel we were staying. Everything served, chicken in pandan leaves, steamed seabass, tom yum sea food, black pepper beef, 3 flavoured fried fish, mixed veges were just delicious which maybe because we had not eaten thai food for the last 20 months. Believe me, there is no halal Thai Restaurant in Vientiane! My kids were obviously upset initially as we would already have been in Brunei by this time but with all the good food served, all of the lingering negative thoughts were all but dissapeared as we gobbled up our lunch, high tea or maybe dinner put together.

Honestly I was not happy with the airline. I do not know if this whole situation was unavoidable. Airlines do cancel flights due to technical problems but having it twice in a row on the same route? Maybe I was just feeling tired after running around the airport like a headless chicken looking for our luggage that were left at the baggage carousel or tired after the queing up just to cancel our immigration stamps on our passports or waiting for the transport to the hotel. Maybe I was feeling hungry too, which the airline seemed to forget that we pre-ordered halal meals and serving halal meals was least of their concern when they put us up at the hotel.

After dinner, I took a long hot bath in the water tub. That at least helped me relieved the tension in the muscles. I only realised that I actually fell asleep in the tub after some water ran into my nostrils. I got out of the tub and funnily enough the last time I remembered I got up out of bed because my sinus was acting up again because I could smell fresh paint and glue everywhere in the hotel room.

Now I am fully awake at the business lounge seeing a couple of falangs playing cards. They must be in the same boat as I am, stuck in a hotel room trying to figure out what went wrong and when they will ever leave for the airport. I am still waiting for the good news when we can fly. The last I heard, it wont be anytime soon as the problem with the aircraft is now not that simple as it initially appeared to be. Well, stupid as this may sound cant they just fly in a replacement aircraft? If it is a code share flight, doesnt the other airline share the same responsibilty of at least giving this some thought?

It has been really 20 months my whole family not been home. the kids have not seen their grand parents, I am looking forward to seeing my sick mum. I miss her so much. In the midst of all this, I even forgot to tell my eldest daughter who is boarding up in brunei, that we had not arrived home yet so I just gave her short sms. I am not sure if she received it. I promised to help her draw up her post script for her law grad entry next year. It was nice of her starting her first draft by coming up with an introductry quote from me:

"my father a lawyer himself, used to tell me that a good lawyer is one that will not choose silence as his option when things are ill done....."

Well kaka amal (whom I always fondly refer to my eldest princess) "silence is never an option when things are ill done because to make us the better men, we should not live on the laurels of the praises that we get but learn to improve from the painful criticisms that we receieved" which is exactly what I am doing on my post tonight for our pride and joy, our national airline.

Home sweet home

Home sweet home

We are all packed and ready to go home sweet home. Today is officially the start of my 18th month posting leave. That means I can go back to Brunei with my entire family on an all paid leave. Actually its been more than 21 months my whole family have not been back to Brunei. So all of us a very excited. I told the kids to come up with a to do list and we will need to priotize them. Of course visiting their grand parents will be on top, second will be food hunting, third will probably be going to the beaches. Well, being posted in a land locked country, the kids have been saying they miss the family picnic at the beaches. In Brunei, we do have nice beaches. My favourite is Pantai Muara and Pantai Seri Kenangan. I for one miss Bukit Shahbandar and the Tasek, my almost daily jogging track. Tasek is a reserved forest turned recreatioanal area. With its pristine jungle close to the heart of town its popular with Bruneians for some good run or light jog.

We will fly off this afternoon via Bangkok. Until then..:-)

The French Clinic

I am now at the French clinic trying to get an appointment with a doctor. This clinic caters mostly for expats as there are no private hospitals here.The clinic is small but amazingly it is well equipped and the doctors are really nice. I happen to know one of the doctors whom I met at one of the farewell functions hosted by my good friend the Indonesian Ambassador. The doctor happens to be half Indonesian and half dutch. So for emergencies my family and I would visit this clinic. This is only my second visit. There is another clinic run by the Australian embassy which is also open for expats in emergency cases. I sent my son there when he caught dengue. I have been having this persistent stomach cramps for more than a week and I don't know what really causes it. I went to see a doctor at the clinic last week(my first visit) and he said that there is a bug going around at the moment. I cannot understand it. I took all the medications given and I'm still having painful cramps. I'm just hoping I have nothing serious as we will be taking our summer break back home next week and I don't want to end up lying in bed convalesing. I'm looking forward to this trip and I'm sure my kids too especially the boys as they have not been back home for nearly 2 years. I can see there are a couple of patients also waiting so I have a good feeling I will be here for a little while. I just saw a man walking in having an argument with the receptionist. I could hear him complaining why the que was long. He was raising his voice and the poor lady said she couldn't do anything about it as there are many patients waiting. I guess the receptionist is used to this petulant show of impatient behaviour. He needs to understand being a patient is being patient. Duhh!

A friend sent me an email on this today and I thought it's hilarious. Please pardon me on the slight vulgarity of the language used but it is part of the whole joke.

Mathematics:

Eat Pray Love

Eat Pray Love

Asking a man to read the best selling book "Eat Pray Love" is as cruel as forcing a eunuch to read the Kama Sutra. Honestly, I had the book like 20 months ago but somehow I havent got the time (as an excuse) to even read through the first chapter. I even bought the DVD, it's movie adaptation and tried to watch it but somehow fell asleep with only barely 15 minutes after I switched on the play button. Not even Julia Roberts, my favourite actress could convince the man in me that it is a book worth reading on a personal memoir about the existential problems of a woman suffering from midlife crisis. I must be a normal MCP because the audience for "Eat Pray Love" was 72% female on its opening weekend. My source: BoxOfficeGuru.com. (maybe the other 28% which made up of men who went to watch the movie were either drugged or threathened with something by their wives or girlfriends)

But when I picked up the book by comedy writer Andrew Gottlieb which penned a male alternative to Gilbert's 2006 memoir, titled "Drink Play F@#k" somehow it clicked and I could relate. I actually finished reading it in a week which you can say is a record time as I usually take time reading 3 to 4 different books at the same time. I have to say that the book is a more masculine version that probably took a complete satirical parody of Eat Pray Love. The book tracks the fictional trip of Bob Sullivan, who journeyed across the world after his marriage of eight years fell apart until he rebounced and met a new love of his life Alicia. I could have sworn that I thought at first the book was a personal memoir only to realise it was fictional after the author's name on the front cover is not Bob Sullivan. I would give a thumbs up on the book. I quite like the anecdotal advice on the last chapter of the book on how one can be happy. True to life, we do have choices whether to be happy or sad but the best starting point to be happy is to keep our life as simple as possible and Not to complicate things like having endless sexual orgies or drinking parties. okay, being a man, I wont lie. I do have thoughts if the Peter character in the book can be real especially the chapter where Bob met Peter at the "Cove" somewhere in Phuket where the latter chartered a luxury boat manned or rather womanned by only sex hungry curvacious women crew and set sail into the tropical ocean!
At the final chapter Bob makes a list of what makes him happy and his cant be the same as ours as to make you or me happy is something very individual. I do have my own list:

1. When my wife and kids whisper to my ears "i love you"
2. When I birdie a golf hole
3. Sipping freshly brewed coffee
4. When my daughters come to me seeking fatherly advice
5. clearing my Visa card bill
6. Making others happy, like approving leave of my staff and giving them suprise birthday gifts and cakes
7. Getting a surprise call from people I consider good friends asking how am I doing
8. Hanging out at weekends with my siblings (which I have been missing since we moved)
9. Visiting mum and dad which I also have not done since December last year:-(
10. Sitting on my Osim massage chair reading good books

There are a few more but since today is saturday, my golf weekend and it is already 530 am, I will stop for now. I am trying to make myself happy by trying to hit some birdies which incidentally is number 2 of my list...bye:-)

To my little princess, I wish you a very happy 11th birthday. I am writing this post especially dedicated for you my little sweet heart, my little angel. Babah will always love you.

You never forget to kiss me before you go to bed. You never forget to hug me before you go to school. You never raise your voice even when you are upset. You soothe my ears every time you say "I love you babah". You make me cry when you sing "dance with my father". You told me it is your favourite song. Your soft voice calms me down.

I will always give you my heart, I will always give you my soul, and I will always give you all the love that I hold within me. I will always give you my compassion. I will always give you my laughter. I will always give you my encouragement. I will always give you my arms with which to hold you when you are feeling down.

Indeed if there is an angel on earth, it has to be you, my perfect angel. Happy birthday sayang, babah will always love you.
